Pure Fun

So you think you can write? Always had a hankering to profess to the world? Or are you suffering pen paralysis caused by the trauma of a sadistic former English composition teacher?

Regardless of which camp you fall into, here’s how you can see whose work among famous writers your writing most resembles: http://iwl.me/.

So grab a few paragraphs you’ve written, cut and paste them, and hit the button. You’ll be surprised. Better yet, grab someone else’s writing and have it analyzed.

Yes, I did mine. No, I won’t say (full-blown imposter syndrome or psychosis at work?).

Consider this a fun way to maybe build some practice morale. Ask each employee to submit one or two paragraphs of their writing from an old email or letter to the editor or letter to their mom or that private novel in the trunk. Tell them it’s for an in-house contest and it will not be made public. Incentivize it with small prizes or rewards like coupons for ice cream, or a gift certificate to the business of their choice.

When you get the submissions, pop them in for analysis. The person whose writing matches up to the biggest/best selling writer wins. Let them in on the fun at the next staff meeting. The second place prize might be an old grammar text from a used book store.

Frivolous? Perhaps. By show of hands though, who among the practices out there believes cultivating better writing is of no benefit to their business?
