As a child I wanted to rescue every little critter I could find. I rescued baby birds fallen from trees, lizards caught by my own cat, and any little furry thing that would slow down long enough for me to catch it. One of the most important aspects of minimizing and coping with compassion fatigue, or “the cost of caring”, is to be sure to care for yourself along the way. This isn’t as easy as it sounds. The type of people drawn to veterinary medicine are typically selfless, in that they see the suffering of animals and they will expend every ounce of their energy on healing the sick and helping those suffering.
